measure the size that you want the bench to be then ring around wreckers (building ones) or salvage yards for 2nd hand hard wood; sometimes you can score some very good stuff cheap just persevere as it is your first bench I would not use new timber as it can get pricey as you may make mistakes. cut the legs out of really thick timber(about 8cm x 8cm) to the height you want. Cut out a section at the top to fit a piece across so that it is flush pre-drill and join with screws that are a good length but don’t go through all the way. you now have two l_____I at the length you want; join the 2 together with 2 pieces at each end the width you want by pre-drilling and screwing or by nailing. you now have the frame so to complete your bench nail or screw planks across leaving small gaps between each plank. It is not difficult at all and a lot easier in doing than explaining and a drill is a necessary tool for the screwing as well as pre-drilling the screw holes. I built my first bench and seats just recently and just ad- libbed my way through without a plan. I have since looked at plans and became disillusioned as the planks are all cut before not as you go.
You might start by getting some idea’s online or get a book on decks. There are endless ways to build a bench so you will want to decide what suits your needs. Good luck!

First thing is to get some wood and take it from there……
