Build your own slate?
Quite frankly, you cannot build slate.
Slate is sedimentary rock, which takes thousands of years to form.
Slate is a bluish-gray rock that cleaves (splits naturally) in broad, flat segments. Mainly composed of chlorite, mica and quartz, slate is formed when layers of clay sediment (the soil and debris that settles at the bottom of a body of water) with large concentrations of these minerals are compressed into sedimentary rock. The sediment hardens in thin layers as it compresses, creating a very hard rock with hundreds of naturally flat layers.
Looking for a substitution for slate?
There is no substitution for slate, but there are cheaper alternatives. *Keep in mind that you get what you pay for:
Inexpensive recreational billiard tables use non-slate playing surfaces, including
Slatron and Permaslate – Hard, synthetic materials that are basically sheets of plastic layered over particle board
Honeycomb – A stiff plastic honeycomb structure between two sheets of plastic
Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) – A flat piece of material made from compressing tiny pieces of wood together, also called pressed wood or particle board
*The biggest problem with non-slate surfaces is that they warp easily and don’t have the durability to maintain a perfectly flat playing surface for any length of time.
You need not be a pro to play on a slate bed table. If you’re looking for a solid surface that will not warp and will last a lifetime, slate is your best option. Over time, it WILL be worth the investment.
Of course you can build your own table, but you cannot build slate.
How to build your own pool table: http://billiards.about.com/od/tables/a/03_09_05slate.htm (you’ll notice that in the instructions, slate is required (or suggested) –it’s the only part of the table you cannot actually build. You’ll likely have to invest in rubber cushions, too).
Good luck -

Just buy a table, after you buy all the materials, then put in hundreds of hours of labor, for it still not to roll right, you’ll hate yourself for not just doing the practical thing. Purchasing a pool table .
