Landscaping timbers are not a good choice. They are cut from material that is not suitable to make structural lumber. They are not meant to support any weight. Would hate to see poor Dad land on his butt.

You would be better off getting just plain dimensional lumber, not landscape timbers that are coated with tar or pressure treated with arsenic salts.

You can fasten a 4×4 to the wall with anchor bolts for the back edge. You can drill a pair of holes through the edges of 2x4s and run two long threaded rods through them to bolt them together into a solid top. Then use 4×4 legs in the front and for the short sides. That is a solid bench that will outlast any kind of rough work that will be done on it.

6x6x8 timbers, and 2×10. Now what im describe is the bench/planter boxes i built for the golf course i work at.

Cut two 6×6 to about 6′. lay them on the ground. take the remaining 2′ set between the 6′to form a rectangle. secure with 8" timber spike. (Helpful hint, pre-drill front timber, drive in with sledge-hammer).
After first layer is done stagger second one above it. Drive stake done through second to bottom. Now the ones I made are four layers high. The 2×10 are then put around the top as the bench. Fill with dirt and plants, ba-da-bing ba-da-boom you have yourself a nice bench and flower box.

If you want I can send you some plans I made for the projct (budget deal).
